Lingerie Gift Guide: What to Buy Her (and How to Get the Size Right)

The short answer: the best lingerie gift ideas for her start with one question, how sure you are of her size. If you're not sure, buy something that fits at the bust and flows from there, like a babydoll or a chemise. If you do know her size, a matching set or a teddy in a color she already wears is hard to get wrong. And whatever you choose, order early enough that a size swap is still possible before the day.

Buying lingerie for someone else is a small act of nerve. You're guessing at taste, size and how the gift will land, all at once. Lingerie is a popular holiday gift, and the ones that go well tend to follow the same few rules. Here they are, with real pieces from the shop and what each costs.

First, be honest about how well you know her size

This decides more than color or style does. Open her drawer if you can, or check the tag on something she wears often. A letter size (S, M, L) is enough for most of what we sell. Many pieces also list a US dress size next to the letter, like M/6-8, which helps if you know what she wears in dresses.

If you have nothing to go on, don't guess on a structured piece. Pick something forgiving. Our size guide explains which styles have the most room for error.

The safest gift when you're not sure of her size: babydolls and chemises

These fit at the bust and then fall loose, so a size off in either direction usually still works. They also feel more like a present than a dare, which is a nice place to be if this is your first lingerie gift.

White sheer babydoll nightdress with a red heart print and red bow details
Sweet without trying too hard: the White Red Heart Print Babydoll Nightdress, S to L. $28.77.

The heart print one is playful. If she leans more classic, the red floral chemise below is a straight, slip-like shape with lace and a bit more drama.

There are plenty more in Babydolls & Chemises.

If you know her size: a set or a teddy

Matching sets are a good gift because the coordinating is already done. She opens one box and has a complete look. A soft color and some embroidery read as romantic rather than costume-y, which is usually the safer tone for a first gift.

A teddy is a bolder choice. It's one piece, it makes a statement, and it needs a closer fit than a babydoll does, so save it for when you're confident about her size. The holiday teddy below comes in red or pink. Red is the obvious December pick, pink if she doesn't wear much red.

For the one who already loves lingerie

If she has a drawer full of black lace, give her something she wouldn't buy herself. That might mean more pieces in one go. Our four-piece sets come with a bra, matching panty, garter belt and stockings, which is the kind of full look people admire but rarely put together on their own.

The Lace Skirted Garter Lingerie Set in red. It's available in S, L and XL, so check the size selector. $36.30.

The Red Edit is worth a scroll if you want something that feels seasonal.

On a budget? It still doesn't have to look cheap

Every piece in this post costs between $21.24 and $36.30. If you want to stay under $35, our Gifts Under $35 collection is built for exactly that. A simple sheer mesh set in a strong color can look more deliberate than a busy piece at twice the price.

A few things that make the gift go better

  • Pick a color she already wears. If her wardrobe is all black and cream, a neon set is your taste, not hers.
  • Order early. Orders usually process in 1 to 3 business days, but holidays and busy periods can stretch that to 3 to 5. Details are on our Shipping & Returns page.
  • Know the return rules before you wrap. Return requests need to be made within 30 days of delivery. Intimate pieces like bodysuits, teddies and sets with bottoms need to be unworn, with tags and hygiene liners still in place. Stockings and other hosiery can only be returned with the packaging unopened and the item not tried on. Multi-piece sets must be returned complete, because individual pieces of a set can't be returned separately. Tell her to try things on over her own underwear.
  • Give it privately. Lingerie is not a family-gathering gift. Hand it over when it's just the two of you.
  • Add a note. One line about why you picked it does more than any wrapping paper.
