How to Style a Lace Corset Top: 5 Outfits That Work

The short answer: a lace corset top looks best with one plain, structured piece beside it. Jeans, tailored trousers, a slip skirt, or a blazer worn open. Let the corset be the only busy thing in the outfit and it will look deliberate rather than costume-y.

Corset tops are one of the few pieces that move between the lingerie drawer and the rest of your wardrobe without much fuss. Lace makes them softer and a little more romantic, which also makes them easier to overdo. If there is a trick, it is restraint everywhere else. Here are five ways to wear one, with real pieces from our lace corset tops collection.

1. With high-waisted jeans

This is the easiest one, and the one to try first. High-waisted denim meets the hem of a cropped corset top, so you show little or no midriff, and the sturdiness of denim balances out the delicacy of lace.

Ivory with light-wash denim feels relaxed and summery. Black lace with dark denim is sharper and works better at night. Either way, keep the shoes simple and skip the statement necklace. The neckline is already doing that job.

2. With tailored trousers, for dinner

Swap the jeans for straight-leg trousers and the same top suddenly looks dressed up. The gallery for our Black Lace Corset Top shows the white version with navy trousers, and it is a good template: one light, one dark, nothing else competing.

If the restaurant runs cold, put a blazer over your shoulders. Left open, it frames the lace instead of hiding it.

3. Under a blazer or cardigan, for daytime

Want to wear a corset top somewhere other than a night out? Layer. A cardigan or blazer fastened once at the waist shows a slice of lace at the neckline and nothing more. Underbust shapes are handy here, since they sit lower on the body and can go over a fitted tee or a bralette as well.

An underbust shape layers easily: the Black Lace Overlay Underbust Corset Top, sheer mesh and lace, in Black or Violet, XS to XL. $33.18.

The product notes for this one suggest it with denim, a skirt or tailored layers, and that is about right. It is the most versatile piece in this list.

4. With a slip skirt or a robe, for something softer

Lace and satin is an old pairing for a reason. A bias-cut slip skirt in a muted shade turns a corset top romantic rather than bold. At home, the same top under an open robe is about as easy as dressing up gets.

Pick the skirt a shade or two quieter than the top. Purple lace with a grey or champagne skirt looks considered. Purple with purple looks like a uniform.

5. As the statement, with almost nothing else

Sometimes the corset is the outfit. The more dramatic styles, with full lace sleeves, ruffle trim or a lace-up back, look best with plain black bottoms and very little jewelry. Let them be loud on their own.

Red patterned corset top with black ruffle trim, a front fastening and a ribbon tie at the neckline
Ruffle trim and a lace-up back: the Red Lace Ruffle Corset Top, in Red or Purple, S to 6XL. $36.26.

Both of these go up to 6XL, which is worth knowing if you have found corset sizing limited elsewhere.

Fit matters more than styling

A corset top that is too small digs in at the edges. One that is too big gaps at the top and slides down. Either will spoil the look faster than any styling choice. Our corset tops are close-fitting and structured, so a little care with the size pays off.

  • Measure your bust and waist with a soft tape and compare them with the size options on the specific top. Our size guide shows how.
  • Between sizes? With a fixed fastening, the larger size is usually the safer bet. A lace-up back gives you a bit of room to adjust.
  • Sit down in it. If you can't breathe comfortably sitting down, it is too small for a long dinner.
  • Check the hem in the photos. A pointed or curved hem changes where the top meets your waistband, and that affects which bottoms it works with.

Keep the lace looking new by washing it gently. Our lingerie care guide has the details.
